Wake Forest Presbyterian Church Backpack Programs

Our Mission is to provide 6 healthy weekend meals at 3 local schools to children that have been identified as food insecure.

  • The WFPC backup program started in 2009 by congregants of the church (Jim & Sue Crawford)

  • Currently, we serve 65 children per week at 3 local area schools which equates to 260 meals per month.

  • We serve North Forest Pines ES, Wakefield ES and Wakefield MS. North Forest Pines is the only year round that we serve, however, they receive 45 bags out of the 65 bags per week.

  • It costs approximately $7.00 per bag, but we would like to increase the quality and healthiness of the food that we are giving without sacrificing any of our current beneficiaries. We estimate that this upgrade in food quality will increase our bag cost to approximately $10.00

  • We currently have approximately 30 volunteers.  They contribute to our mission in several ways....such as packing, shopping , delivering and providing food/monetary donations. 

  • Due to the increased cost of food, our mission operates on a budget of approximately $20,000 per year.  We currently receive $4,000 from the church budget.  The rest of the funding is from grant money (if awarded) and gifts from congregants.

  • The schools that we serve have yearly food drives to help with our costs.
